Newsviner(s) To Meet In Columbus, Ohio

This may have been the last party I put together. A couple of us sure had fun!

advertisement

If you don't like this headline do something about it. I am publishing this article because there seems to be little movement for a Spring Meet of Newsviners anywhere. I am going to do something and if local and close Newsviners make me a lonely old man I will quit trying to get get togethers together. I feel I am obligated to make this effort.

I know Mykola, Corey, Zaki, maybe TopJedi, merrydeath, stolte, Greta and a few others are within shouting distance of Columbus. I know they can attend a small gathering if they are properly pushed into it. I am going to provide just such a push. We will just have to see how it turns out. Here is my Proposal: I will arrange to have a room at some hotel/motel in Columbus sometime in early April. Probably a Saturday evening. I am thinking the Holiday Inn on Stelzner, near the airport would be good. The refreshments would be byob but if I remember correctly the Inn has a pretty good bar and dining. Depending on the situation, I may also invite someone from Newsvine associates such as AssignmentZero and anyone else who might be interested in meeting Newsviners if Newsviners are interested in them.

It would really be nice if some of you could help me with the publication, notification and urging of others to attend. I am going to get a room regardless of how well this article is accepted. I am going to hold the Meet even if I am the only one there. I am going to do this. I am willing to modify time, place, and agenda but need input to do so. I will continue updating my progress in setting this up at least weekly until the actual date arrives. Please keep watching. Please provide input. I NEED guidance.

My suggestion is a comfortable evening of mutual adoration followed the next morning with breakfast at Jack & Benny's if the size of attendance will allow. If anyone doesn't think this should be tagged World News needs to take that up with our non-US members.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Damn, I was wondering if anyone were going to show up. Anyone Else? Don't ask me questions. Send people, invite people, drag people in. Is your brother in Columbus with you? Bring the family down from Cleveland for the weekend, they can stay at your place.

Damn, Oldfogey, you rock! I am very willing to help in any way I can. First off, let me suggest that we try to make this a whole-weekend event for those of us who are going to have to travel to get there (for example, I am willing to drive the eight hours it would take me, but I sure don't want to turn right around and go home).
A hotel conference room would probably work just fine, and I am sure we can come up with a way to help you raise the funds. The first NDC raised $200 for charity, and no one even got the pleasure of going to new places to see the money implemented. I am figuring we might get an even better turnout if people stood to gain two unforgettable experiences out of it (p.s...the t-shirts are coming, guys, I swear!). As for dates and times, I would propose early May, sometime. Gives us enough time to get this together, but no so much that everyone will forget about it.

Good work, Fogey! I'm in.

Though, I was thinking a bar or restaurant might be more appropriate than a hotel...something about the word "motel" suggests serial killer to me. I'd feel better if I didn't have to drive all the way across town, either. I can't afford a room.

Anyway, maybe a downtown bar like Barley's would be more appropriate? I doubt costs are much higher at the Marriott downtown, or even the Red Roof in off campus, than they are out on Stelzer, but I happen to know that the only way you can get a cab in Columbus is to tell them you're going to the airport.

I'm instantly reminded of the Serial Killer Convention in Sandman.

I've caught a cab once or twice just standing on High Street around campus. And once standing drunkenly in the Brewery District.

Okay, thanks for the feedback. Again, we can do this any time any where. One thing I have to consider, I can't afford much more than a room which we could use as a Hospitality Suite. If more money became available we might be able to go for more room and even some catering. I think it best that each participant make arrangements for accommodations if they are to be overnight or for a weekend. I could go along with a 2 niter if enough want to do that. I will do what I can to help anyone get there or stay there or sleep on the floor but I cannot do everything.

stolte, maybe the Budweiser guy will haul you over in his delivery truck. Celestina, we can go for more than an overniter or if some would like to tour Coshocton and/or our Amish communities (not Sunday) I would be glad to show them around. Everybody keep thinking, everybody keep contributing. We will get there, wherever, whenever.

Coshocton is beautiful in Springtime, too--maybe we could go on a hike at Old Man's Cave or something touchy-feely like that?

Hey, wait, maybe we could rent one of those Hocking Hills chalets? When does the season start?

stolte-sawa, the Cherry Valley in Newark is a wonderful meeting place but high dollar. We could also meet at the Salt Fork State Lodge, or one of the others. In planning this we need to consider that others may want to come from greater distances and airports and transportation may need extra consideration. If we could put enough people together for a really primitive meet I could provide 80 acres of tent space, or room for campers without hookups. Coshocton proper has some campgrounds but probably starting to fill up by late May.

Get your suggestions in. We need to make a firm decision on location and time by April Fool's Day. And even once decisions are made we may have to accommodate vacancies etc.

Tents?! 80 acres? I would love that. I have a tent and camping supplies, and I like the idea of a leisurely event where we can all just show up and hang out. Everyone could bring their own beverages, and throw a bunch of food in the middle for an informal potluck.

I also like the idea of a hike to somewhere pretty, but then I live in Hippie Central, and it may be getting to my brain.

Does anyone else like the idea of camping?

OK heres the deal.

70x101= $6500+500 {$500 tolls and transport} Double center pole

66 round= $2500+500{$500 tolls and transport} Single center pole

There's also a 80' X 120 double pole but the Tents here and the poles are in Wisconsin and it needs a larger flatdeck to transport and would be much more expensive than the above.

Basicly we're looking at finding a $10,000 sponsorship deal to cover it. Brewery's, telecommunications, anyone who wants access to disposable income heavy, high profile, innovative, adaptive, human network instigators and content providers.

It would require a small team starting now. I'm not sure if corp tax works on the same schedule as my biz tax does but returns are due shortly and some corps would be looking at lifting their expenses to offset profits before aprils end.

One of 10 000, co-sponsors, 3 of 3000 whatever.

Or just book rooms or bring puptents but really, people, this reality thing is eminently malleable.

I'm kinda a little afraid of the circus tent, but I think winsome's on to something here.

We could all meet up and have fun, yes, and it would be a blast. I'd love to meet all of you and clink glasses and put faces to names an internet voices and all of that.

But if we all kinda banded together and made this a BFD? That would be pretty fantastic. And amazing. And newsworthy. And newsvineworthy.

Here's what we need to do:

1. Get sponsors. There should be native Ohio sponsors: microbreweries, etc. There should be internet-related sponsors. You want to sell something to internet-savvy people? Give some money. You can set up a table in the tent, no charge. Okay, small charge. There should be area restaurants willing to set up a table and sell food. But the most important thing is the internet thing. AZ should be represented. The sky's the limit, here, people.

2. There has to be a core group of volunteers willing to help swing everything.

3. I'm getting carried away. Let me email Jerry and make sure this kind of over-the-top circus-tent craziness is where he was going with this.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is...we could all get together, NDC-style, only in person, and that would be fantastic. But we could also really do something big. Circus-tent-big. Newsvine-big. We could also get together in May and talk it all over and do the circus-tent-big thing later. Whatever.

Okay, yeah, I've been drinking a little vodka. So sue me.

I dunno, I tend to think big things like this (especially lining up sponsors to fund money) take more than two months to set up, especially this being the first of its kind. Especially since right now we don't know what we are doing and when. Or how much we'd be asking for and what we'd spend it on. If we want to make big thing, I'd be behind making the second annual (or 6 month) meet a big deal 'cause then we'd be able to quote numbers of previous attendees and whatnot. With a lot more planning in advance.

Well I'm stunned, shocked and stunned. One twenty minute meeting defining marketing avenues and cross media prospects. Setting targets for same. Paralleled with shortlisted sponsorship targets, followed by email intro outlining projects advantages and cost equity re newspaper coverage as base.
With online as sponsorship profit.

One sponsorship development and liaison.

One media development and liaison

Copywriting/facilitating/project directing/ backend tent and PA instigator.

Done or not done by the end of next week. Bites carry on/no bites abandon.

Reasons for not doing things always simply boil down to reasons for not doing things.

It's a 2/3 day event. It's not an Olympic opening ceremony.

I'm willing to drive the 5-6 hours from Chicago, and maybe I can drag lauhal with me. I would not be able to do early April, however, as I'll just be getting back from Florida. May is much better, as I'm done with school but my kids aren't.

I'm sure we could pull some money together so you're not bearing the cost of the hospitality suite, although I do like the suggestions of meeting in a bar/restaurant.

The only drawback to meeting in a bar/restaurant is privacy or ability to communicate. If someone knows a bar/restaurant that can be reserved or is so poorly patronized that we can be assured of seating and stools, that is okay. I think, however, if this grows to be as big as it can be, we need to consider allowing libations and food to be an individual responsibility. IF we can get enough solid pre-convention participants, maybe we can rent a whole hall, conference room, bar, restaurant, whatever. We have until 1 April to discuss that. Okay?

I'm definitely up for it. If it ends up being a "bring your own" event, I'm always looking for excuses to bake lots of food. And in either case, I'm good with pitching in to defray the cost.

If anyone doesn't think this should be tagged World News needs to take that up with our non-US members.

I was hoping the world-news tag meant that you Yanks were clubbing together to pay for flights of non-US members. :-)

          Couple of thoughts.

Please do this in May, rather than April. I'll be travelling most of April and doubt I could make it.

The hotel idea sounds, as someone said, very serial-killer-ish. How about Hound Dog's Pizza/the Ravari Room? Open 24 hours, centrally located, near several hotels. I know the owner and could put you in contact with him. They could handle either a large crowd, or a small gathering.

I dunno, I am kind of liking the idea of making it a sort of parody of a bad convention... with nametags and everything. That's just me though. Hound Dogs/Ravari would probably depend on how many people we get, but I have to say I would personally prefer getting our own conference room or something like OldFogey mentioned or at least trying to reserve the bar/restaurant for our use only just so we could get the maximum mingling of Newsvine users without competing for space with random patrons.

I'm down. I'm moving back to columbus in a few days, I got the keys to my new place, and spring classes start next week.

First we need to find out exactly how many people are coming, which will give you an idea how much space we need to accommodate. We should record a part of it, and have a big 1hr show and make it a podcast special for newsvine, maybe talk about the best articles of that week in april or something. I can record up to 3hr in high-quality audio on my iPod.

we could do video too, I got a miniDV camera.

It's going to be one hilarious round-table.

Yes, definitely. Actually, I am banned from using a video camera after 5 drinks. The last time I was allowed, I was video-taping the wedding and reception of a friend. I didn't bother to watch the six hours of tape I had accumulated before passing it all on to the married couple.

Apparently, I forgot to turn the camera off when going to the bathroom, setting it on top of the toilet tank (fortunately turned to the side). And I talked pretty much the entire time, getting shots of the old women wearing leopard-print dresses and making fun of them, that kind of thing. It was less a video of their wedding than a video of my drunken experience of it.

They've been using it as blackmail against me for years.

Maybe we can make one decision now. Which month. Many say May. I would prefer May. If I have no violent opposition by March 22 at 4pm EDT, I will then announce the month. From there we will start considering the date or dates. OK? Eventually we will set up a schedule with all the decided items on it.

I like iarnuocon's contributing his friends restaurant (LOL) but there probably is a better solution. Also I doubt there would be many for the primitive camping but that can be done as a subsidiary or complementary activity for those who want to hang around. Celestina, I have told you before, you and family are welcome anytime.

IT WILL BE MAY UNLESS SOME MAJOR FAULT IS BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION BY THE DEADLINE.

Zaki, it will be hard to find out how many until we have firm dates. May seems firm. Somewhere in or near Columbus seems firm. The actual dates are still to be determined. Once we have the date set we can ask for firm commitments so we will know what we need to prepare for. I am beginning to think the one night stand with a hospitality suite then an expanded agenda based on who can stay for how long and what they want to do. That way those that can only afford in time or assets to come and say hello will not be left to feel disadvantaged and those who opt for more than that can expect to support their own visit.

I'm in the same boat as Noah. I'd love to come, but it'd be pretty difficult to convince my parents to buy me a ticket to Ohio so that I could meet a clown, an old fogey, a drinking contest organizer, a Jedi, and a nihilistic philosopher who's now also a brother.

Oh, did I mention that we're meeting in a sleazy hotel with sexy pantless women (as pictured above), and, I met these people over the Internet.

Well, I was going to be a camera with my newsvine earnings, but it would almost be a bit fitting to use them to buy a ticket for a newsvine get together.

Someone just needs to pick a date, cause ticket prices go up the closer to the date.

I'm in Cleveland, so Columbus is doable. How 'bout a more central location, like Downtown or close to it? That would put us near the Arena District, the Brewery District, German Village, Short North etc.

I think it would be great to meet everyone!

Good Morning, All! Had a good sleep. Woke up anxious. PLEASE FORGET DEADLINE FOR MONTH. IT WILL BE MAY. Now, we need dates. Should we start Friday evening or Saturday afternoon? The Saturday dates are the 5th, 12th, 19th or 26th? PLEASE EVERYBODY, ONE MORE TIME, GIVE ME YOUR CHOICE FOR FRIDAY OR SATURDAY AND WHICH WEEKEND? Considerations: More people likely to attend if start Saturday. Friday better for those who can spend the time and stay over either local or in the area. I have already made some contacts and will soon elaborate on a full agenda but need to set firm weekend and day before proceeding. Some things get too complicated when left to committee so when I know when I will put out an agenda that should cover everyone's desires: Hospitality, Booze, Accommodations, Food and Entertainment or Touring. I will try to arrange so everyone can do their own thing but still attend the main event: A MEETING OF THE MINDS ON NEWSVINE.

            Talk to me, Folks!

I'd personally rather do a Friday just because I'm going to have a lot of people to visit in Ohio. Memorial Day weekend would be fun because people would have more time to do stay over stuff, but people might also already have plans and it might be harder to book a place if we aren't doing the camping thing (though it seems that is a popular option.) Also w/ Memorial Day weekend, flights in and out of Ohio will be more expensive for those of us flying (and traffic will probably be horrendous for those of us driving.)

The 18th/19th would be preferable for me.

Saturday would be better for me, as it would give me time to drive there! 18th/19th sounds good. Memorial Day wouldn't work for me, as I have regular plans for that weekend.

I can do pretty much any weekend in May. Personally, I would prefer to arrive there on Friday, but I think the "big event" should be scheduled for Saturday. Perhaps we can set it up with a small, low-key meeting place on Friday, and then a big, all day (meaning, we start at noon, earliest) shindig on Saturday. Sunday can be reserved for recovery...

I have to put my vote in for May 11-12-13 as I will be in Washington on the 17-19. I also like the idea of having things start small on Friday with a big event/gathering on Saturday. I will drive from Cleveland and would be happy to carpool with anyone who's interested (I don't know if flights are any cheaper into Cleveland but that could be an option).

I have other plans on the 19th, but any other weekend in May is grand. Also, we might plan a hike down in Hocking Hills for the "adventurous", which could happen either on a Saturday or Sunday for those staying over. Regardless of which night is picked. HH is about an hour away from downtown Columbus. A less rugged but still fun hike could be had at Highbanks Metro Park, just outside of 270 on the north side if anyone is interested. Plenty of room for a picnic.

Akron Canton airport is a small low-hassle airport that puts you about an hour closer to Columbus than does Cleveland. Airtran flies there & the prices are good. Don't know the car rental situation.

Actually, the Akron airport is only marginally closer in driving time. My sister flew into there instead of Columbus last year because we thought it would save me a drive but it only saved me about 20 minutes. Of course, that just depends on where in Cleveland you live.
