This may have been the last party I put together. A couple of us sure had fun!
If you don't like this headline do something about it. I am publishing this article because there seems to be little movement for a Spring Meet of Newsviners anywhere. I am going to do something and if local and close Newsviners make me a lonely old man I will quit trying to get get togethers together. I feel I am obligated to make this effort.
I know Mykola, Corey, Zaki, maybe TopJedi, merrydeath, stolte, Greta and a few others are within shouting distance of Columbus. I know they can attend a small gathering if they are properly pushed into it. I am going to provide just such a push. We will just have to see how it turns out. Here is my Proposal: I will arrange to have a room at some hotel/motel in Columbus sometime in early April. Probably a Saturday evening. I am thinking the Holiday Inn on Stelzner, near the airport would be good. The refreshments would be byob but if I remember correctly the Inn has a pretty good bar and dining. Depending on the situation, I may also invite someone from Newsvine associates such as AssignmentZero and anyone else who might be interested in meeting Newsviners if Newsviners are interested in them.
It would really be nice if some of you could help me with the publication, notification and urging of others to attend. I am going to get a room regardless of how well this article is accepted. I am going to hold the Meet even if I am the only one there. I am going to do this. I am willing to modify time, place, and agenda but need input to do so. I will continue updating my progress in setting this up at least weekly until the actual date arrives. Please keep watching. Please provide input. I NEED guidance.
My suggestion is a comfortable evening of mutual adoration followed the next morning with breakfast at Jack & Benny's if the size of attendance will allow. If anyone doesn't think this should be tagged World News needs to take that up with our non-US members.
I'm down, Jerry. A hotel by the airport, tho? Well, maybe... Anyone else? How come you didn't drop this in the Vine Meet group?
Damn, Oldfogey, you rock! I am very willing to help in any way I can.
First off, let me suggest that we try to make this a whole-weekend event for those of us who are going to have to travel to get there (for example, I am willing to drive the eight hours it would take me, but I sure don't want to turn right around and go home).
A hotel conference room would probably work just fine, and I am sure we can come up with a way to help you raise the funds. The first NDC raised $200 for charity, and no one even got the pleasure of going to new places to see the money implemented. I am figuring we might get an even better turnout if people stood to gain two unforgettable experiences out of it (p.s...the t-shirts are coming, guys, I swear!).
As for dates and times, I would propose early May, sometime. Gives us enough time to get this together, but no so much that everyone will forget about it.
I'd prefer sometime in May as well. I'm planning to come back to Ohio for a visit sometime that month anyway. But that's just me.
May is easier for me too, I will be done teaching.
Good work, Fogey! I'm in.
Though, I was thinking a bar or restaurant might be more appropriate than a hotel...something about the word "motel" suggests serial killer to me. I'd feel better if I didn't have to drive all the way across town, either. I can't afford a room.
Anyway, maybe a downtown bar like Barley's would be more appropriate? I doubt costs are much higher at the Marriott downtown, or even the Red Roof in off campus, than they are out on Stelzer, but I happen to know that the only way you can get a cab in Columbus is to tell them you're going to the airport.
something about the word "motel" suggests serial killer to me.
I'm instantly reminded of the Serial Killer Convention in Sandman.
I happen to know that the only way you can get a cab in Columbus is to tell them you're going to the airport.
I've caught a cab once or twice just standing on High Street around campus. And once standing drunkenly in the Brewery District.
I'm instantly reminded of the Serial Killer Convention in Sandman.
I believe you mean the collector's convention...ahem... ;)
I believe you mean the collector's convention...ahem... ;)
Well technically I mean a "Cereal Convention." Technically.
I have caught several things over in Germantown. A few were beers, some were quite other things...
hope they didn't overstay the (un)welcome, Jerry.
Sorry, too far for me but just wanted to say I'll be there in spirit. Guys - have a good un; have an xtra one on me.
Finally...my life has meaning.
Stolte-sawa, thanks for the link to Columbus Brewing. The Apricot Ale looks...interesting. I'm up for it.
Winsome, the circus tent sounds boss! And I've learned my lesson. No mime jokes.
Ooh, I recommend you stay away from the apricot ale. There's no other word for it: it's just kinda gross.
Awww, now you're just raining on my sense of adventure (don't worry....I've ingested some pretty bizarre things).
I know, I know...the idea of fruit and beer mixed together does some kind of unnatural. At the very least, they could have the decency to call it a shandy.
Anyway, I'll still probably try a swig, just to say I've done it....
Well, if it helps, I've had it. It's... not terrible. But it's really not that great at all either.
Eric, I thought I had posted aresponse last night, but it doesn't seem to be here. It may have been vacuumed up by the planned server migration last night as the unworthy crumb of a comment that it undoubtedly was....something glib about fruit-induced hangovers.
Anyway, neither you or S-S are making me feel like I want to try it. So now I have to.
I'm willing to drive the 5-6 hours from Chicago, and maybe I can drag lauhal with me. I would not be able to do early April, however, as I'll just be getting back from Florida. May is much better, as I'm done with school but my kids aren't.
I'm sure we could pull some money together so you're not bearing the cost of the hospitality suite, although I do like the suggestions of meeting in a bar/restaurant.
I'll put my thinking cap on and see what I can come up with in the way of suggestions.
Where's the hot-chicks tag, Oldfogey!
I'm definitely up for it. If it ends up being a "bring your own" event, I'm always looking for excuses to bake lots of food. And in either case, I'm good with pitching in to defray the cost.
If anyone doesn't think this should be tagged World News needs to take that up with our non-US members.
I was hoping the world-news tag meant that you Yanks were clubbing together to pay for flights of non-US members. :-)
I figured Zenaid was some kind of concert - like Live Aid- intended to raise money for just that purpose.
LOL, sbutki. All donations gratefully accepted.
Couple of thoughts.
Please do this in May, rather than April. I'll be travelling most of April and doubt I could make it.
The hotel idea sounds, as someone said, very serial-killer-ish. How about Hound Dog's Pizza/the Ravari Room? Open 24 hours, centrally located, near several hotels. I know the owner and could put you in contact with him. They could handle either a large crowd, or a small gathering.
I dunno, I am kind of liking the idea of making it a sort of parody of a bad convention... with nametags and everything. That's just me though. Hound Dogs/Ravari would probably depend on how many people we get, but I have to say I would personally prefer getting our own conference room or something like OldFogey mentioned or at least trying to reserve the bar/restaurant for our use only just so we could get the maximum mingling of Newsvine users without competing for space with random patrons.
Well, honestly, I'm pretty much OK with the consensus, here. Camping, conference, what-have-you. Just let me know when and where, and try to avoid April, which will be very difficult for me. That's all I ask.
I'm down. I'm moving back to columbus in a few days, I got the keys to my new place, and spring classes start next week.
First we need to find out exactly how many people are coming, which will give you an idea how much space we need to accommodate. We should record a part of it, and have a big 1hr show and make it a podcast special for newsvine, maybe talk about the best articles of that week in april or something. I can record up to 3hr in high-quality audio on my iPod.
we could do video too, I got a miniDV camera.
It's going to be one hilarious round-table.
I could video as well.
If there's going to be alcohol, I may have to try and veto any talk of video cameras. If I may.
Good point, Eric.
Thirded. No evidence is best.
What happens at the Newsvine conference stays at the Newsvine conference. Nothing more permanent than chat.
I love the idea of recording it. Tasmania is just a little too far away to be there in person! Maybe next time :)
I can see recording some of it. Conversations between viners, when one viner first meets another, that kind of thing.
There should be a time limit. That way the only people caught doing stuff are the lightweights :p
Yes, definitely. Actually, I am banned from using a video camera after 5 drinks. The last time I was allowed, I was video-taping the wedding and reception of a friend. I didn't bother to watch the six hours of tape I had accumulated before passing it all on to the married couple.
Apparently, I forgot to turn the camera off when going to the bathroom, setting it on top of the toilet tank (fortunately turned to the side). And I talked pretty much the entire time, getting shots of the old women wearing leopard-print dresses and making fun of them, that kind of thing. It was less a video of their wedding than a video of my drunken experience of it.
They've been using it as blackmail against me for years.
That sounds like a wonderful piece of found video art! You should put it on YouTube.
Oh, no no no. I don't think that would be a very good idea.
;)
He he he.
I'd wanna go, but i'm scared of Columbus! Help! Hehe.
Scared of Columbus?
He's a Wolverine, I think.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I was run out of town the last time I was in Columbus...
...of course that had something to do with singing The Victors in the Buckeye Hall of Fame.
You're lucky you weren't stoned to death by buckeyes.
Dirty stinking wolverines!
Nittany Lions baby!!!!!! : )
@!$%# let's just meet on the oval. bahaha.
are Clevelanders allowed?
absolutely Miss J! I'd even be willing to carpool if you're up for a drive to southern Ohio with a relative stranger. :)
hi, merrydeath,
I'll send you a note. If it's in May - maybe. Being a wholly-owned subsidiary of my children, I can't always get away during the school year, but we'll see.
Warning: I sing loudly to 98.5 WNCX
Miss J - 98.5 WNCX is playing. Let's be hearing you:-)
Warning: I sing loudly to 98.5 WNCX
That's awesome. Sometimes I yell loudly at people on WCPN. :) I think I'll let you take charge of the radio.
{air guit riff: then hollers} "Layla!"
I'm usually within shouting distance, but this May I will be down in Brazil the first half and out to Vegas and the Grand Canyon the second half.
It's very cool how you bring people together Oldfogey. Something about you all in Ohio that really know how to pull a good time together in RL or even on the vine.
Though I'm probably close enough to attend (I'm guessing a 6~ hour drive), it would be a most difficult task to convince my parents of:
Parents: "So who will be at this 'convention' thing?"
Noah: "Well, some middle-aged, liberal crackpot alcoholics."
Parents: "Grounded."
...But you guys have your fun. Maybe in a few years when I'm old, independent, and even more cynical I'll join ya.
Well, some middle-aged, liberal crackpot alcoholics
Who're you calling middle aged?
Sorry, I was going to say "moderately to excessively old individuals," but my do-not-insult-your-elders lesson kicked in.
I'm in the same boat as Noah. I'd love to come, but it'd be pretty difficult to convince my parents to buy me a ticket to Ohio so that I could meet a clown, an old fogey, a drinking contest organizer, a Jedi, and a nihilistic philosopher who's now also a brother.
Oh, did I mention that we're meeting in a sleazy hotel with sexy pantless women (as pictured above), and, I met these people over the Internet.
Spoilsport! Where's your sense of adventure?
Second thoughts, you ran for Republican preselection.... the answer is clearly "Alive and well, and with a dash of irony."
Does Columbus have an airport and does someone living there have a place on their floor for me?
double yeah
Well, I was going to be a camera with my newsvine earnings, but it would almost be a bit fitting to use them to buy a ticket for a newsvine get together.
Someone just needs to pick a date, cause ticket prices go up the closer to the date.
@!$%#, too tired to type/think straight. be a camera = buy a camera. I'm not even sure if the rest of what I wrote makes sense of not.
Does Columbus have an airport and does someone living there have a place on their floor for me?
so long as you don't kill us....Syler.
Wow, Columbus is such a welcoming place.
Hey, so has anyone e-mailed the newsvine staff with these plans? Perhaps one or more would like to represent at the meeting. I'm sure they must have some sort of expense account for stuff like this.
I go to Ohio State so I could make it :) I'm not exactly one the famous Columbus Newsviners though ;) I just read and comment.
I can make you a star in 5 days.
Frenzy eye for the New Viner. Now on Bravo.
I'm in Cleveland, so Columbus is doable. How 'bout a more central location, like Downtown or close to it? That would put us near the Arena District, the Brewery District, German Village, Short North etc.
I think it would be great to meet everyone!
nice. i'm so there.
