With my history, especially my early history on Newsvine, you probably wouldn't expect me to ask this question but it struck me that in certain quarters I and others are slinging around our candidates names pretty freely. I am beginning to wonder whether we should be doing this. I wonder if it good for us. If it is good for Newsvine. Is it good?
What really bothers me are two things. Am I being too overbearing with my support of Obama? Are there some of us who directly represent a candidate and found Newsvine fertile ground for planting our seeds and hope they grow on the vine? Are these two questions mutually exclusive or do they indicate a situation of a distinction without a difference? Can we stump for our personal choices? Should we be trying to organize support for a candidate here?
As a news organization we probably shouldn't be doing either of these things. As a news organization we should be presenting facts, telling it like it is and being satisfied with allowing the reader to make up their own mind about what the facts mean. That is the way most of the MSM handled such things until the recent rise of the television talking heads and their entertaining little blogs hidden within supposed newscasts. Do we join them or do better?
As a community, I guess we can interact like any community. If I were in Ohio right now I would probably be down on my County Court square and telling all who will listen to vote for Obama. I have always gone there and told them to vote, regardless. Of course people can come by my park bench along the square and tell me to get lost or to shut up. No one ever does. But am I expressing my concern properly here? Should we be limiting ourselves to what we post within the Community?
Leading up to the Iowa Caucus the stump speeches and campaign slogans and testimonials are getting mighty thick on Newsvine. I suppose, once the early Primaries are over, this will die down. But then there is the election itself coming up next fall. What will things be like then? Will our normal everyday postings crowd all else off the screen? Will the debate and exchange create animosities? Will our good old Newsvine community be able to withstand the onslaught? Quite a lot may be riding on how we answer these questions. Not just for Newsvine but our country as well.
