Wading through a sea of confusion.
Let's define the Corporate Press as those outlets, channels, media which purport to identify, report and distribute the news. News being the happenings or events concerning humanity throughout the Universe. The Corporate Press tends to identify news that just so happens to coincide with the best interests of Corporate. If the Corporate is heavy into entertainment the news is more likely to be about Cruise or Sheen or Lohan or Diller. If the Corporate is mainly a Defense Contractor the news will be more about threats to the nation or the state or the community. If the Corporate is a big publisher of books you can bet your bippy the news will be filled with Authors and their books. In other words, Corporate Press brings us news that is slanted toward or about the very happenings that will cause the reader/viewership to see what Corporate wants them to see as news.
For most purposes MSM and Corporate Press are synonymous. They are separated only by the fact that Corporate News includes only those news organizations that are hidden within or overseen by a much larger Corporate entity, whereas MSM also includes a small number of periodicals and blogs and public supported operations which deliver news to a very large portion of the nation. PBS, NPR, The Nation, and a few others come to mind. MSM are the media which deliver the popular news but not necessarily just the news or even all the news.
Now we define The Free Press as all the media, publications, videos, broadcasts, documents, letters, notes and any other attempts to distribute news to the general populace. The Internet has opened a whole new bowl of cherries. We can find all kinds of instruments trying to relay news from its source to the ultimate reader. These supposed entities range from the mediocre and subversive to genuine attempts by citizens and groups of citizens to bring truth, intelligence and knowledge to the masses. To a greater and greater degree the truly Free Press exists only within this last group. Corporate is selling something, MSM is trying to support growing organizational difficulties and the this last group is hampered by the ability to gather members while having the most amazing communicating abilities mankind has ever possessed.
The future of The Free Press will depend on just three basic understandings and undertakings. Identify the news, this requires a person seeing news happen and putting that news into words that the general population can understand and use. Report the news, this means there must be a means of communication for the observed news to be forwarded to others. Distribute the news, create and maintain an organization for the sole purpose of delivering the news to those who need it.
Folks, if we are really interested in a Free Press then we must make it our own. We cannot expect others to provide us with the news we see before our eyes. It will become distorted.
