There are times when I find myself going to some extreme end in order to explain some absurdity only to wind up becoming absurd myself. I am going to take a chance on doing just that right now. I am going to explain my thinking on how we should conduct The Free Press. Notice? I said we, We, we! I have no intention of doing this The Free Press thing all by myself. I wouldn't do it if I could. I need help. I may even need help to become absurd. But not to go to extremes. That I can do all for myself. Or is it the other way around?
Let's talk the New Newsvine and Nations and the restraints and abilities we have with this new site. As members we are allowed to create and own up to 15 Nations. If each member created one Nation and then visited 14 others we would have at least as many nations as we have members. Does that mean we don't need columns? Membership in Newsvine entitles us to publish to the world. Nations allow us to restrict that publication to whatever few we wish. Does that make real sense? I would suggest that if we all got in to one Nation we would all be together for everything and forever. But wouldn't that be like the old Newsvine when you were all mixed in with Friends and Trolls alike? So? At least we could find our friends. We could ostracize trolls. Killing trolls and spiking stalkers with our lances. Some of us liked being hunters among the wildlife.
Now, let's consider what happens when we all pile into one Nation, or a few, and try to communicate and publish. First of all, everybody is included, no exclusions, no pigeonholes, no rat holes. Just lots of clean, white, open space to write to our heart's desire. The new Nations also contain a search facility that seems to work well in finding friends without even asking us to differentiate between text, users and anything else. It is like magic. And, if we only gather our Friends into The Free Press and we bring them all, then we can go to the Membership List for the Nation and we have a listing of all our Friends.
Tracking, yes, tracking bugs me and it has bugs but it is getting better. After all is said and done the new tracker differs little from the old tracker. Yes, you are right, no way to track just your friends but if all your friends are in The Free Press where do you have to track them to? And if they really are friends, is it too much to go to their column for a view of their latest? Sometimes I think we have become like spoiled children with so many toys to keep us busy we become bored with the toys.
You know, if tracking friends and following people are such dire needs why couldn't we just publish an article in our individual columns where we linked to all of our friends? Hey, we could, and there are a lot of articles we could write that linked to other info we want to keep in hand. WOW! Discovery! Think about it. With enough links inserted by a Member into his/her/its article that member could be the all wise one. They would have everything at their fingertips.
Extreme? Absurd? Yes! Yet everything I have said can be done, will be done, and may be our undoing but these things are now available to us in the new Newsvine.
